Class 08 90v AVR

Postby 58002 » 08 Oct 2014 10:50

We have a couple of 90v Class 08 AVRs which need overhaul. They are marked up as "Newton Brothers (Derby) Type 4/58356P".

Two questions;

(i) Does anyone have a manual or any paperwork relating to these AVRs please? I have copies of the WOSS 513-1 but I suspect this only applies to the 110v output regulators.

(ii) Is there anyone who can overhaul/refurbish these AVRs at reasonable price?

I suppose it's also worth asking if anyone has any other regulators available for sale as well at the same time.

WOSS 513/01 also applies to the voltage regulators for 08s. Which issue of the WOSS do you have?

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. David, I have WOSS 513/1, it is issue 5. I wan't sure if this applied to 90v AVRs as well as 110v ones?

Thanks also Gary, I have emailed Noel for info.

Also someone mentioned that Downing & Mills used to refurb these items, does anyone know if they still do?

For some time the chaps at Strathspey Railway have kept the AVR (4 wire) on our 90V shunter operational, although of late it is giving problems and going into winter with the inability to maintain good batteries independent of the shore charger is a poor prospect. Although I have cct diagrams of the various 90V & 100V, I do not have any literature on the AVR itself. Its a simple beast but just feeling its age and it might be best to consider replacing it in the medium to long term. In the short term we will repair it.

I had thoughts of designing a PWM controller for the loco, however this might be daft if someone else has already come up with either an analogue an digital equivalent reliable and proven electronic equivalent. We would be scraping about for parameters at that too, although we have a test jig in the prototype stage to begin that process.

Is anyone in the forum in a position to advise or assist in this matter ?
