31207 looking a lot better already- some new panels where there was a lot of rust and the holes in the bodywork have been filled. With a bit of paint over these sections, she'll look very good indeed. 31207 is now available for traffic and will cover the October yellow diagram as well as some mixed traction gala turns (five loco-hauled round trips on Saturdays). I saw the 31 briefly when window-hanging at Weybourne yesterday. 24081 was on top form and looking, and sounding :!: :!: :!: , spectacular. Top marks for the thrash; especially the throaty snarl as the 24 tackled Kelling Bank having stopped at the halt. I'd never even seen, let alone ridden behind on full power, a Class 24. I'll be sad to see her go- wish she could have been there for longer as she would look so good with the 25!

The 25 will not be operational until next year I don't think- badly corroded cab floor panels and some electrical issues. She's also started to look a bit faded, but that's not a major issue.

24081 is going back to the GWR on the 19th October, So on Saturday 10th October it will be out working for the last time. but don't shot the messenger. First train will be 0945 from Sheringham. Covering the yellow diesel time table.

Sadly, if you do want to make your way to the NNR for some last minute 24 mileage, trains will be to the October yellow timetable so 24081 will only be doing 5 round trips instead of the usual 6. That's still 51.25 thrash-filled miles though! First 24-hauled train is at 09.45 from Sheringham, 09.56 from Weybourne and 10.30 from Holt; running every 1.5 hours until the 15.45 from Sheringham, the last trip of the day. She's a great loco with plenty of thrash available (1.160hp sounds like nothing on Earth on that 1 in 80 climb away from Kelling Heath Park [scaring all the cyclists in the nature reserve 8) :!: ] just before the cutting) so make the most of her if you haven't already. I don't know who'll be driving as I have not been at the railway since 26th September and will not be at the railway on Saturday. Wish I was there :!:

So, that's pretty much it as far as Class 24 running, and diesel running as a whole, is concerned. But don't worry, you still have some time to get your last mileage of 2009 from 31207. 31207 will be working next Saturday (17/10) on the October yellow diagram with five full round trips (50+ miles) starting at 09.45 from Sheringham. The following weekend (Sat 24th and Sun 25th) is a children's hands-on event so I'm not sure if any diesel running is planned- although there is chance that the Saturday could see a loco-hauled service as the website says that the standard yellow timetable is in operation. I don't think it's very likely that the Sunday will see any locomotive activity- but I may be wrong. Saturday 31st October is just four kettle round trips and Saturdays and Sundays in November are mainly 'blue' days on which, due to the absence of an operational boilered mainline loco, will all be covered by a cart (either 101 DMU or railbus).

But that isn't the end of diesel running entirely at the NNR. Next year will see a patched-up 31207, a more reliable 25057 (fingers crossed) and plenty of yellow Saturdays in early summer and early autumn. Mainline loco running usually starts round April/May time depending on whether there are available locos. 25057 is not operational at the moment but should be by next Spring as the cab floor at no.2 end (I think) has corroded panels which must be replaced before the loco can be driven from that end. Also, I think that the 25 still has a few electrical and brake faults which need ironing out before she can thrash once more. 31207 has been patched up and is looking much better already- those holes in the bodywork are now gone. A shame if you liked seeing 31207 in her weathered state, but otherwise a huge improvement. Anyway, only the bodywork which had holes in it has been dealt with so '207's still looking a bit weathered. The repaint of 31207 into green is still a long way off- some of you bashers may think this is sacrilegious, but I disagree entirely!

From the Sheringham webcam, it was noted that 24081 was out again today; this probably being the loco's very last foray on the railway. 31207 was rostered, but 24081 was obviously used instead. Any reasons? Maybe they thought it would be nice to give 24081 a final 'final run' on the railway before the road movement was booked to take place. Don't suppose there were any bashers though.

One or two unhappy 31 cranks, having made a 3 hour trip to get there apparently.
Battery problems allegedly.

Good job the trusty 24 was still there (from an operational point of view and not a 31 crank's)- otherwise the rattling cart would have to have been drafted in! At least there was still some loco haulage. Battery problems with the 31- oh dear. The new set of batteries only went in four years ago- let's hope the 31 can be fixed easily  This may leave the NNR with no operational diesels; fortunately it's the end of the season and we can start with a clean slate in April 2010 8)

Would you like to expand on the two question marks?

I must say, the 24's been very reliable during the time the NNR have had it and the NNR has had a lot of use out of it. Don't get me wrong, the 31's been extremely reliable over the past year or so but the 24 has not had any major problems during its visit, save for a minor air leak or something like that in July as far as I know. The 24 has been relied on all summer and autumn to cover for other locos, including carts and kettles, that have failed. Having said that, the 24's visit was only brief.

That sort of thing doesn't happen at the NNR. The loco department makes a decision, even if only the night before  , and sticks to it unless there are circumstances which preclude the use of a rostered loco. I am sorry if you have been made to feel like that through the NNR changing their mind at the last minute, and want to assure you that this creates operational headaches as well. The only reason why the rostered loco would ever be changed at the last minute like that would be that the rostered loco had developed a fault that could not be rectified in time without causing the day's service to be disrupted. I am genuinely very sorry that you felt the need to make a comment such as that, and apologise for any upset the substitution of 24081 may have caused.

The drivers at the NNR enjoy driving all of the locos (though they'll always have favourites) and understand the enthusiasts' expectations so it's unlikely that they'll ever take on this unprofessional attitude. I know many of the drivers personally and they're excited about driving any loco, be it a 24, 25, 31...
(though I must say that holding a conversation in the cab of the 25 is not a particularly easy task   ) The 24 and especially the 31 are a lot better soundproofed 8) In fact, most drivers' favourite loco to drive is the 31 because it's a reasonably large loco which is interesting to drive inasmuch as you can pull the power handle to the stop quite often

31207- looking much smarter- out today for the very last booked loco-hauled service of the year. Not many bashers and in the pouring rain but still looking good. Tomorrow a cart will probably be out.
