Well, it's a new year and there are a whole stack of yellow Saturdays coming up very soon for your bashing pleasure. Now in 2010, we have, at the NNR, confirmed the following Saturdays as yellow Saturdays with a full diesel diagram; that is: six round trips departing Sheringham at 09.45, 11.15, 12.45, 14.15, 15.45 and 17.00 hauled by (hopefully) a mainline loco. At the moment, we have 25057 and 31207 operational. 47367 is being re-painted and having bodywork attention following a bogie swap, and 37032 remains under overhaul; but don't worry: as I have said a million times before no doubt, the work on these locos is (and I've seen it once or twice for myself) being completed to an exceptionally high standard (apart from the inscription HAPPY DAYZ [spelling test for whoever wrote that] on the nose-end doors of 37032 when I last saw her    ) Anyway, joke over; these locos will be well worth the wait when they're gleaming in new coats of paint, looking ex-works and thrashing finer than ever before judging by the high standard of work that is going into overhauling them. This year, the opportunity might be taken to do some work on 31207 as there are still a few rust areas in need of attention (she was patched up a little back in October though which eliminated the holes) and the fuel injectors on 31207 need replacing. But as far as we know, the operational locos at the start of the season will be 25057 (looking a lot smarter) and 31207.

And the provisional dates for your diary? So far: Apr 10, Apr 17, Apr 24, May 8, May 15, May 22, Jun 19, Jun 26, Jul 17, Sep 11 and Sep 25. Sadly none in October this year. But don't worry, as the big event for the diesels this year is the Mixed Traction Gala on Jun 5&6- hopefully all available mainline locos will be out then.

The current intention (subject to availability) is to have the diesel diagrams operated by a mainline loco on Saturdays AND Sundays this year, on both the yellow AND red services. This means there will be roughly 40 days with a mainline loco rather than 15 or 16.

In addition it is hoped to run the diesel hauled goods trains again this year. Provisionally these are scheduled to run on Sundays and Bank Holidays during the red service. The last two passengers trains on these days will then be loco hauled, meaning another 12 or 13 days of mainline loco running. All other diesel services will be operated by the Class 101 or the Diesel Railbus.

The 5th and 6th June is the Mixed Traction Weekend when it is hoped to run a number of the serviceable diesels alongside steam, as well as one or two of the units.

Please note that all services and loco allocations are subject to availability and may be altered without notice. Please check with the railway beforehand if you wish to travel to see a particular loco.

A mainline diesel is due to run at the NNR's Level Crossing Celebration Gala on 12th to 14th March. It is likely to be Class 25 25057, subject to availability.

A diesel pilot is also expected to be in use at Sheringham over the event.

Details are available on the NNR's website:

37194 was of course the very first loco to traverse that level crossing at Sheringham for more than 40 years- she gave us some thrash when crossing and then continued on to Holt and back before returning across the crossing towards Norwich. 37194 made a special run from Norwich for this.

There are many photos and videos of this occasion: try Geoff's Anglia Photos (for example) or put it into YouTube for one of Peter Boggis' excellent videos. Not a running day as such, but a memorable occasion which a 37 was part of.

Just in case any of you are in the area over the Easter w/end (Good Friday-Easter Monday) and fancy a spot of haulage at the NNR, do pop to the NNR for the 16:30 and 17:40 diesel trips from Sheringham because these will see a loco-hauled service all four days Good Friday-Easter Monday. Booked motive power is 25057 (hopefully with operational boiler), so the thrash is bound to be good. Although the red service is operating, the 25 will only be working those two trips as the Sunday diesel-hauled demonstration freight does not start until mid-July.

Should you wish to make a day of it, there's even a bit of haulage on offer at the Mid Norfolk this weekend as well. Not sure which locos specifically but it'll probably be one or two home fleet locos working the blue/grey set.

MNR Easter running:
Think it's 31438 and D8069 Top n Tail with the Blue Grey set (load six) tomorrow (Good Friday) and the 31438 doing three round trips on Saturday. Now sure about Sunday. Rumours are that its Scotty (101 DMU) on Easter Monday.

For future reference, the NNR's (diesel hauled) demonstration goods trains are running on every 'red service' Sunday and 'red service' Bank Holiday Monday this year. This is two trips from Holt to Sheringham and back each day, the loco will then work the last two passenger services as normal.

The goods trains ran yesterday and today and are due to run again on the 'red service' Sundays and BH Mondays at the start and end of May.

I didn't know that! Someone kept that one quiet. I was basing my assumption on what had been the case last year, though it had in all fairness only been finalised in June- probably because of increased interest from the visit of 24081. When it was announced that it was happening this year, I still only thought it'd be July & August though.

Anyway, fantastic news for us diesel fans at the NNR! They must have turned around their flawed 'little demand for diesel' theory pretty quickly- and I reckon it was the visit of 24081 that put paid to that. Still, having said that, it was always fairly busy (or I assumed it was because there was definitely competition for the best window) with diesel cranks when a 31 was out in May and June.

The 25 was out on Saturday and came out to play on a Weybourne-Sher-Holt-Sher when a kettle burst. It then did the evening run as normal.

25057 also covered all day last Friday for 65462 which failed just before its first train.

Who said that these tea-making devices were reliable? Still, we must feel sorry for those who may have travelled specially to the railway to see the J15, no doubt they would have been very annoyed, but are kettle fans like that? Can't be very good for the families either.

Ring Worm was still running so visitors were able to choose between proper traction and a kettle. I didn't notice any cranks out for it. Trains were full with normals though which was good to see.

There was a whole day of 03 running late last year. Not widely advertised so not much of a turn out.

There is a mixed traction gala in the Summer- keep an eye out to see if the 03 will be out to play then. No 08 at the mo (looking great though), and the 11 doesn't go far off Weybourne shed.

31207 had better be, otherwise we would be in dire straits: she's the only mainline loco operational at the North Norfolk at the moment, as 25057 is having more work done (maybe repairs to the corrosion around the floor area of the no.1 end cab this time, seeing as that was definitely in the pipeline- please do correct me if I'm wrong, Andre, for the benefit of all forum viewers). The 25 is due to be back again for the mixed traction w/end on 5/6 June- so a bit of 31 haulage from now on.
