"
I would like to say a BIG thank you to all those people who travelled far and wide in order to patronise the Spa Valley Railway's first diesel gala.  Whilst we had little control of the sweltering weather which we trust did not detract too much from the event, we hope you all had as much enjoyment as we had organising and running the event"

9016 worked the return 'Queen of Scots' on Monday from Doncaster to Clapham Yard as booked but returned via the Midland Main line due to operational problems on the ECML at Stevenage. The loco is now back at Ropley but will not be working the Steam Dreams ECS today because the ECS loco is to remain on the the rear of the train to Portsmouth and as the train is vacuum braked this is unsuitable for Deltics due to the requirement of the engine to remain idling to sustain air brake pressure.
The loco move from Doncaster to Kidderminster was cancelled yesterday. Another attempt will be made today with the same times as yesterday.

Confirmation has been received that the proposed D1015 tour to Newquay has been postponed until next year, this is because of pathing problems on the Newquay Branch. One piece of good news on the D1015 railtour front is that Hertfordshire Railtours have details of a Kings Cross - York trip thereby recreating D1023's 'Western Talisman' tour of 1976. Details of this are here
I have been asked to point out that all trains at the GCRN gala next weekend are 'Top & Tailed' and not double headed. This is because run round facilities are not yet in place at Ruddington or Loughborough. Some gen for photographers is that further shunting of the stock between Ruddington and Rushcliffe Halt will take-place on Weds/Thurs/Fri 16/17/18 July in preparation for the gala. There will be plenty of opportunities for different shots (like a Class 25 on load 9 MK2!!). All shunting and moves are subject to availability and no timings will be available.

56097, which is undergoing restoration at Cardiff Cathays, has had the power unit lifted out. Photos here and here. The unit was sent to another site where it will undergo an 'F' exam and work is now underway to thoroughly clean and repaint the engine room. The parking brake frame and traction motor blower were also removed for overhaul. Since the locomotive's bodywork is in reasonably good order it is not intended to carry out any significant external repainting until the locomotive nears completion. The exception has been the battery box doors which were showing signs of corrosion, no doubt as a result of their exposure to acid. Both battery box doors have now been shot blasted and repainted. It is hope to begin the bogie during the Autumn with a second set of bogies obtained as a source of spares.

On Sunday 9016 worked the ECS from Alton to Waterloo for a steam charter to Exeter. The Deltic then shadowed the tour west and worked the return as far as Yeovil before following light and returning the ECS to Alton later in the day. A photo is here.  9016 was due to haul ECS again this week for another steam charter however repairs to the Deltic mean that it will miss this trip.
The same charter however will make use of 50031 on arrival at Waterloo tomorrow. The 50 will be utilised to haul the empties via a circular route from Waterloo to Waterloo enabling the steamer to be pointing in the right direction..

D9009 has been diagnosed as having a fault in the no.1 end power unit and until further investigations are complete will be restricted to one engine only - a fairly common occurrence on some Deltics during the latter part of 1981! As such Alycidon is booked to run light from Barrow Hill to Didcot tomorrow to collect a steam loco and then return to the roundhouse the same day.
D1062 moved under its own power at the weekend - the first time since 1998. The Western, currently undergoing overhaul, moved a short distance up and down a siding at Bridgnorth utilising one of her engines and no major problems were found.

News on 37264 at Tyseley saw the power unit lifted out on Tuesday and the generator split off. The generator has been sent away for cleaning / overhaul - the first such attention since 1984. The engine bay will now be cleaned and repainted, whilst the power unit receives an 'E' examination and thorough degrease before the generator is reattached. Inspection of the power unit show it to be in good condition considering it has been stood out of use since late 1999. No.2 cab rebuild continues with all major structural work, electrics, conduit and cubicle now completed - such was the damage due to water ingress that all items have had to be fully stripped down and overhauled. Bodywork replating has commenced in the worst areas and will continue throughout the summer before any repaint is undertaken. Photos are here and here

Further information with regard to the TPWS fault on 46035 on Saturday is that the loco was piloted by 47756 from Bristol to Penzance with the locos working in tandem and on arrival at Long Rock depot the TPWS fault was rectified however the Peak developed a speedo fault and the 47 was once again required to pilot the train. It was hoped that the pair could continue to Birmingham but traincrew problems meant the 46 was removed at Bristol leaving the 47 to attempt the Lickey alone with rather less than spectacular results....a nine and a half minute ascent was recorded!
46035 is currently at Barton Hill depot and it is planned to move the loco to London on Wednesday on an EWS service.
Work has started on the restoration of D5353(27007) at Ropley. The engine is seized but work is underway on a overhaul and this is expected to take 12 months to complete along with electrical and bodywork repairs. The loco will be finished in BR blue as 27007. Photos are here and here
