An agreement has been reached for 27103, currently at the North
Norfolk Railway, the spend a year at the East Lancs Railway. The loco is
unable to go to the Dean Forest Railway as expected because of the current
axle loading restriction on the line. It is planned for the loco to leave
Norfolk next week and hopefully to arrive in Bury in time to take part in the
East Lancs Diesel Gala.
37142 has at last completed its move to Bodmin arriving there today.
Work continues on another 27 - 27007 at the Mid Hants. Repairs are being
carried out by the 71A Locomotive Group and the engine has successfully
been barred over and is now moving freely after a soaking in diesel. It is
planned for the loco to be moved to Ropley shed shortly to allow the power
unit to be stripped for liner re-sealing and a bearing exam.
One of the plates fitted to 9016 after its overhaul at Brush in 1999 is being
auctioned on e-bay. Funds raised will go towards the upkeep of D9000, D9002
and D9016. A link to the e-bay page is

The DPS railtour that was to have taken 55019 from London to
Penzance has sadly been cancelled due to low bookings - adding yet another
'preserved' diesel traction railtour to the list of cancellations for one
reason or another this year.....
50017 has been started at Tyseley for the first time in over two years and later
undertook short test runs in the loco works yard. Once rectification work is
complete the maroon 50 will be used for work in connection with Vintage Trains
steam hauled railtours.
September is a busy month for diesel galas this year; this weekend sees the
annual September Diesel Gala at the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway which will be
featuring traditional Scottish locos from classes 20,25,26,27 & 47 plus a
visiting Freightliner 47 for this event. More details are
here. The weekend of
20/21 September sees a number of events to choose from - the Bodmin and
Wenford are staging an event which includes the operational home fleet of
33110 and 50042 plus 37142 on display following its planned arrival from
Barrow Hill. It is hoped EWS will be able to provide 47306 plus a class 66 and
67. Details of this are
here. The same weekend sees a promising gala planned at the
Great Central Railway with the resident fleet in action as well as visitor
33201 plus, hopefully, 37255 and 25035. 37255 has had the bulk of its repair
work completed and is on course to appear at the event - a recent photo of the
loco is here. A late addition to
the bill is a 'Mixed Traction Gala' at the Chinnor & Princes Risborough
Railway featuring residents D8568 & 31163 plus 08011. More details are

D1013 was damaged in a 'rough shunt' at Bridgnorth the weekend before last
involving the SVR's steam crane which was being shunted by 'pannier' 1501. The
Western has minor damage to platework around both cabs and it is hoped to
repair the loco in time for the diesel gala in October.
37075 will share the running on the GCRN this Saturday with a Manor class
steam engine and on Sunday 50007 will be working along with the steamer plus
66707 which will be named at Rushcliffe Halt as well as working some trains.

A reminder of the
Buckingham Railway Centre Diesel Day is this Saturday with the former
Marylebone based class 115 DMU operating shuttles in the morning and 04 shunter
D2298 hauling trains in the afternoon.
The diesel gala at the East Lancs from the 12th - 14th September will be the
first the feature trains along the Heywood extension, although because the
signalling is incomplete there will be
no through trains apart from the beer-ex on the
Saturday night. The Bury -
Rawtenstall service will operate on a 50 minute interval as normal with trains
on the Heywood extension being top & tailed from Bury. All available traction
will be working on all three days. Further details nearer the date.

The repaint of D9016 at Toton has been completed to a very high
standard by the EWS depot. The loco now sports a very shiny coat of two-tone
green with small yellow ends. The wipac light clusters are retained and have
been blended into the new livery very well. The Deltic is expected to return
south to the Mid Hants in the near future.
A web page for 50050 has been published
here. The loco
is undergoing final repairs prior to a Resco examination to enable the loco
the enter traffic for DNLL who will be operating the loco for the long term.

An agreement has been reached for the sale of Cotswold Rails'
31203. The loco has previously been the subject of a number of attempted
preservation bids and remains at the Brush works at Loughborough
requiring, amongst other things, a body lift to enable re-certification of the air
tanks. The potential owners intend to base the loco at the
Chasewater Railway.
Details for the loco are here
Battlefield Line based 37227 was

Work has started on the soon to be 'D' 9016 at Toton. The loco is in undercoat
in preparation for two-tone green livery.
To coincide with that weekends Bo'ness Diesel Gala the Caledonian Railway have
been asked if they will be able to operate a diesel hauled service on 7
September. If there is sufficient demand the 1130 ex Brechin will be hauled by
27024 on that day. Anyone interested should email

"I would like to say a BIG thank you to all those
people who travelled far and wide in order to patronise the Spa Valley
Railway's first diesel gala. Whilst we had little control of the sweltering
weather which we trust did not detract too much from the event, we hope you
all had as much enjoyment as we had organising and running the event"

9016 worked the return 'Queen of Scots' on Monday from
Doncaster to Clapham Yard as booked but returned via the Midland Main line due
to operational problems on the ECML at Stevenage. The loco is now back at
Ropley but will not be working the Steam Dreams ECS today because the ECS
loco is to remain on the the rear of the train to Portsmouth and as the train
is vacuum braked this is unsuitable for Deltics due to the requirement of the
engine to remain idling to sustain air brake pressure.
The loco move from Doncaster to Kidderminster was cancelled yesterday. Another
attempt will be made today with the same times
as yesterday. |

Confirmation has been received that the proposed D1015 tour to
Newquay has been postponed until next year, this is because of pathing
problems on the Newquay Branch. One piece of good news on the D1015 railtour

I have been asked to point out that all trains at the
GCRN gala next weekend are 'Top & Tailed' and not double headed. This is
because run round facilities are not yet in place at Ruddington or

opportunities for different shots (like a

here and
here. The unit was sent to another site
where it will undergo an 'F' exam and work is now underway to thoroughly clean
and repaint the engine room. The parking
brake frame and traction motor
blower were also removed for overhaul.
Since the locomotive's bodywork is in reasonably good order it is not
intended to carry out any significant external repainting
until the locomotive nears completion. The
exception has been the battery box doors which were
showing signs of corrosion, no doubt as a result of their
exposure to acid. Both battery box
doors have now been shot blasted and repainted.
It is hope to begin the bogie during the Autumn with a second set of bogies
obtained as a source of spares.

On Sunday 9016 worked the ECS from Alton to Waterloo for a steam charter
to Exeter. The Deltic then shadowed the tour west and worked the return as far
as Yeovil before following light and returning the ECS to Alton later in the
day. A photo is here. 9016 was due to haul ECS again this week for another steam charter
however repairs to the Deltic mean that it will miss this trip.
The same charter however will make use of 50031 on arrival at Waterloo
tomorrow. The 50 will be utilised to haul the empties via a circular route
from Waterloo to Waterloo enabling the steamer to be pointing in the right
direction..
D9009 has been diagnosed as having a fault in the no.1 end
power unit and until further investigations are complete will be restricted to
one engine only - a fairly common occurrence on some Deltics during the latter
part of 1981! As such Alycidon is booked to run light from Barrow Hill to
Didcot tomorrow to collect a steam loco and then return to the roundhouse the
same day.

News on 37264 at Tyseley saw the
power unit lifted out on Tuesday and
the generator split off. The generator has been sent
away for cleaning / overhaul - the first such attention since 1984. The engine
bay will now be cleaned and repainted, whilst the power unit receives an 'E'
examination and thorough degrease before the
generator is reattached. Inspection of the power unit show it to be in good
condition considering it has been stood out of use since late 1999. No.2 cab
rebuild continues with all major structural work, electrics, conduit and
cubicle now completed - such was the damage due to water ingress that
all items have had to be fully stripped down and overhauled. Bodywork

Further information with regard to the TPWS fault on 46035 on
Saturday is that the loco was piloted by 47756 from Bristol to Penzance with
the locos working in tandem and on arrival at Long Rock depot the TPWS fault
was rectified however the Peak developed a speedo fault and the 47 was once
again required to pilot the train. It was hoped that the pair could continue
to Birmingham but traincrew problems meant the 46 was removed at Bristol leaving
the 47 to attempt the Lickey alone with rather less than spectacular
results....a nine and a half minute ascent was recorded!
46035 is currently at Barton Hill depot and it is planned to move the loco to
London on Wednesday on an EWS service.
Work has started on the restoration of D5353(27007) at Ropley. The engine is
seized but work is underway on a overhaul and this is expected to take 12
months to complete along with electrical and bodywork repairs. The loco will
be finished in BR blue as 27007. Photos are

25278 will working the 1050 and 1350
