There are 367 preserved mainline diesel locomotives in the UK based on various privately owned railways, as well as a few running on the main rail system. This website is intended to provide a photographic record of each of these engines as well as details of the lines on which they are based and details of any diesel events.

The term ‘preserved’ has become blurred in recent years with locomotives owned by preservation groups regularly working charters and even service trains on the main UK rail network. A lot of thought has gone into what should and should not be included on this site and currently these are the guidelines;

  • Locomotives owned by preservation groups/societies etc.

  • Locomotives not registered to work on the mainline (If registered it must not be available for any term of hire other than specific one off charter/special advertised service trains)

  • Locomotives must not be owned by a Train Operating Company or Leasing Company.

The points above are basically trying to say ‘Locomotives in the care of organisations where the secure future of the engine is the priority’. There are of course the odd exception to the rule and if you think I have missed anything – let me know.
